Cloud Computing

What is Cloud Computing?

As the concept of cloud computing continues to create a strong buzz throughout the IT industry, companies are scrambling to research this latest, and seemingly greatest, offering in IT. But what really is cloud and how can companies effectively and efficiently utilize it?

Cloud computing is commonly defined as an IT infrastructure offering that virtualizes all resources- RAM, CPU, storage, etc. At first glance, it may appear simpler than it truly is.

Think of it as an improved virtual server. Not only can it store your vital information, it can run your applications and keep critical data safely stored somewhere away from your main data location, closer to any potential end users.

Another aspect of cloud is that it lets you upgrade software and hardware quickly to keep up with changing demands. Cloud computing offers the ease of scalability and the ability to configure servers to your specifications. You decide how much RAM, CPU power and storage you need with the ability to tweak these settings whenever you need to.

The Technical

Behind the fluffy, white clouds and buzz worthy name, cloud computing is a highly complex, multitude of interconnected virtual servers that are networked together, allowing for information to bounce between them.

This divides the data storage among the servers. In many instances, data passes through a load balancer as well to maintain optimal traffic flow. Allocation of information and data is then presented through server virtualization, without requiring purchased or leased hardware.

Cloud in Practice

Information will appear through a web browser, while data is stored safely in a data center and simultaneously accessed by anyone.

Work from your desktop at the office, access your data from a laptop at home, or pull the information from a public computer. Welcome to cloud computing, where the information always auto saves and everyone can work together.
